‘Picture Postcard’ perfectly describes this detached, grade II listed, 3 bedroom thatched cottage, which is a landmark property in this picturesque coastal village. Steeped in history, this refurbished, 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom cottage with open plan living provides a great mix of character and 21st century living.
The cottage currently operates as a successful holiday let and provides a rare opportunity to acquire a beautiful property in the sought after Lee Bay and is within easy driving distance of the sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Putsborough and the famous surfing beaches of Croyde and Saunton.

Dating back to 1653 and greatly refurbished more recently, Old Maids Cottage provides very comfortable living with character features such as an inglenook fireplace and exposed beams and combined with the modern day comforts of today's living it provides a lovely ambience. The property has been in the rental market for several years and has established itself as a successful holiday rental property for 6 people.

Old Maids Cottage has a strong historical background as it was originally named after a local poem which tells of three young women who were so picky about would-be husbands that they ended up as ‘ the three old maids of Lee “. The poem became famous when it started to be sung during the First World War, with the troops saying that they were going to return home and go and marry one of the 3 old maids of Lee (see image). The house was even reproduced as a china model by the ceramics firm W.H.Goss of Stoke-on-Trent, one of a range of models of famous cottages released by Adolphus Goss in 1893 .
Over the years many postcards have featured Old Maids Cottage and it is still to this day, one of the most striking period properties within the village and the subject of much admiration.

On the ground floor there is a sitting room and dining room with galley kitchen along the rear of the property. On the second floor bedroom 1 has an ensuite bathroom and patio doors leading out to a terraced area, bedroom 2 with ensuite bathroom and there is a further bedroom and family shower room. It has it’s own driveway parking for 3 cars, a lawned and terraced garden and a smaller enclosed garden area with outside seating.

Some two hundred yards away is The Grampus Inn, a 14th century building with smuggling associations that up until the 1970s was a working farm. It is now a popular pub where families are well catered for and walkers and dogs are always welcome.

    Location Description
This eye-catching cottage is situated in the centre of the village and just a short walk from the sea, where the Atlantic meets the spectacular North Devon coastline. Lee Bay offers a wonderfully secluded hidden gem of a beach which can only be accessed when the tide is right, and which is a firm favourite with the locals in the summer! At low tide, it reveals a sandy beach ideal for swimming and plenty of rock pools, with kayaking and canoeing a favourite at high tide. The views alone will not disappoint for those content just to sit and watch nature unfold.

The cottage is ideally placed to make the most of the spectacular surrounding countryside. The South West Coast Path is just moments away and offers inspiring scenic walks along the coast between Ilfracombe and Morthoe. For cyclists there is the Tarka Trail and exploring the hidden treasures of this area couldn't be easier.

Spending the day surfing the waves on these very popular beaches and being able to retreat from the hubble bubble, through fuchsia lined lanes, to this scenic village is considered the icing on the cake for many.
