Welcome to North Devon

North Devon is known for its natural beauty: soft, golden sands; rugged cliffs; lush green countryside; and the untamed wildness of Exmoor.

But there’s more to it than that. North Devon has beautiful, interesting and historic attractions, good leisure facilities and a thriving economy. The area is also a walkers’ and cyclists’ paradise.

North Devon’s regional centre is Barnstaple, where you’ll find the main business, commercial, leisure and shopping venues, but there’s also plenty of interest to be found in the slightly smaller towns of Ilfracombe, Bideford, Torrington and South Molton. However, the attractive coastal villages of Croyde, Woolacombe, Braunton, Saunton and Georgeham are perhaps the most desirable places to live, as they combine a cosy village feel with great beaches and proximity to all that North Devon has to offer.

North Devon is known for its natural beauty, but this takes many forms: the soft, golden sands of Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton; the rugged cliffs at Morthoe; the untamed wildness of Exmoor.

But there’s more to it than that. From Lynmouth on the north coast, to Hartland near the Cornwall border, and inland to South Molton, North Devon has beautiful, interesting and historic attractions, good leisure facilities and a thriving economy. The area is also a walkers’ paradise, with miles of the South West Coast Path to be enjoyed, and the Tarka Trail offering miles of easy, flat walking and cycling.

Barnstaple, the regional centre of North Devon, houses the area’s main business, commercial, leisure and shopping venues. The town has many favourite high street shops, as well as a diverse selection of local stores. Other notable facilities include the Pannier Market, North Devon Leisure Centre which provides swimming and other indoor sports, the Queens Theatre, and a four screen cinema. At Barnstaple there’s access to the North Devon Link Road, leading through to Junction 27 of the M5. London Paddington can be reached via Tiverton Parkway train station in just over two hours, and Exeter from Barnstaple train station in one hour. The nearest airports are at Exeter and Bristol.

The other larger North Devon towns are considered to be: Ilfracombe with its attractive harbour, good theatre and ‘Verity’, Damien Hirst’s controversial statue which has divided opinion and put the town on the international map; Bideford, the pretty ‘little white town’ that sits on the mouth of the River Torridge; and South Molton, a bustling inland market town.

When it comes to quaint villages and historic attractions, North Devon has them in abundance. The attractive coastal villages of Croyde, Woolacombe, Braunton, Saunton and Georgeham are perhaps the most desirable places to live, as they combine a cosy village feel with great beaches and proximity to all that North Devon has to offer. However, there is also great character in the villages further south, such as Instow and Appledore, on either side of the Torridge with a ferry service linking the two, and the quaintly pretty Clovelly, with its steep cobbled streets and working harbour. A trip to see Lundy Island’s puffins and seals is always a fascinating day out, with boats leaving from Ilfracombe and Bideford. And the dramatic scenery and unique wildlife of Exmoor National Park – stags, Exmoor ponies and birds of prey – is enough to make anyone feel like they’ve entered a different world.

However, the attractive coastal villages and hamlets of Croyde, Putsborough, Georgeham, Woolacombe, Braunton, Saunton and Instow are perhaps the most desirable places to live, as they combine a cosy village feel with great beaches and proximity to all of the wonderful attractions and scenery that North Devon has to offer. This makes them the ultimate in coastal living and a real must see that will guarantee to offer you the greatest luxury lifestyle.
